I have been reading Psalms 6 today as part of my effort to make it through Psalms and attempt to help God help me. I have pains and bitterness, but I don’t know how to let go or take steps towards change. I’ve lost so much about my faith. I feel unsteady. Reading Psalms 6 today shook me.

In the chapter, David describes crying out to God, asking for mercy and describing his weeping and stating that his bones and soul are vexed. I had to stop there in my reading—my bones and soul are vexed, too. I felt like David was writing about me!

I once heard someone describe the book of Psalms as book of songs and poems that start out as complaints, but end up as worship. This is true of this chapter as well, because at the end, David makes his stand and demands that the “workers of iniquity” part from him. He firmly states that God will hear and receive his prayer.

When I was reading this, I felt this was such a powerful statement of faith. You can see he describes some sort of brokenness in the passage, but still manages to believe firmly in God’s power.

I want that faith.

My heart aches for peace. I keep praying, and reading, but I feel lonely and tired. I know it’s my anger, my bitterness—its always my anger and bitterness—stopping me from drawing to closer to God, to find peace.

I just wish I could figure out how to forgive at let go.

Another period film that is assuredly spectacle yet relies on intricate detail to inform character is Hugo. The film’s costume designer Sandy Powell is a household name typically associated with large-scale productions featuring hundreds of extras. Hugo is no exception, though there are hidden meanings to discover, like the layered beauty of the film itself, if one peers beneath the surface. Hugo is a 3D fantasy world rooted in the physics of reality but full of possibilities. Dreams come alive, nightmares too; intense reds, blues and greens surge from the screen. Powell commented exclusively to Clothes on Film, “The colours like some of the styles were deliberately heightened as if from a child’s perspective. All the scenes of Paris seen from the station are also a storybook version of Paris rather than being totally realistic“.

"Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come."

“Oh, the joys of those who do not follow evil men’s advice, who do not hang around with sinners, scoffing at the things of God: But they delight in doing everything God wants them to,and day and night are always meditating on his laws and thinking about ways to follow him more closely. They are like trees along a river bank bearing luscious fruit each season without fail. Their leaves shall never wither, and all they do shall prosper.” Psalm 1:1-3

Lately, I’ve been contemplating on my separateness from God—how separate and conflicted I often feel from my faith. Yesterday, I began steps to be healthier, and today I plan to begin steps to bear better fruit.

I want to be like those trees on the riverbank, I want to delight in the law, and let it set me free. I want my faith to feel like springtime all the time. So, I’ve decided to start reading through Psalms, something I have never truly done before. I plan to read a little bit of it each day and reflect on it to the best of my abilities.

Maybe, after a while, I won’t even have to think about being those trees along the river bank—I’ll already be them.

God did not call us to be humans. He created us as humans but called us to be holy as He is Holy.
